On the last Friday of the month, ARTafterDARKa group
of dynamic young volunteers dedicated to exploring the artspresents
an evening of fun and socializing with gallery tours, entertainment
and no-host refreshments at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

BOX JELLYFISH
ADVISORY
For unknown reasons, stinging box jellyfish may “invade”
south shore beaches (Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Waikiki,
Ala Moana, etc.) between 812 days after the full moonwhen
the moon is going from the waning crescent to the old moon.
For a daily report on beach conditions, call (808) 922-3888
and press *51. When box jellyfish are in the water,
lifeguards will have this sign posted. STAY OUT OF THE WATER! If
you are stung, seek assistance from a lifeguard and, if
you have an allergic reaction, call 911.

FIRST FRIDAY GALLERY
WALK
The art galleries, museums and cafes in the Honolulu
Culture & Arts District invite you to the First Friday
Gallery Walk. From 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the first Friday
of every month, stroll to the many galleries for opening
receptions and other events plus special entertainment at
the Hawai'i State Art Museum. For details, call The ARTS

IOLANI PALACE TOURS
The only royal palace on United States soil has recently
added a 45-minute audio tour that guides you through the
building with the aid on an audio “wand.” ‘Iolani
Palace is open Tuesday through Saturday. Docent-led Grand
Tours ($20) are held from 9:0011:15 a.m. while
Audio Tours ($12) are available between 11:45 a.m. and 3:00
p.m. (Note: Children under 5 are not allowed
on these two tours.) The self-guided Galleries
Tour ($6) can be taken from 9:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Information:

KUHIO BEACH TORCH LIGHTING
& HULA SHOW
At 6:30 p.m. nightly (6:00 p.m. from Nov. 1), watch a torch
lighting and conch shell ceremony along Waikiki Beach. Immediately
following, enjoy a FREE hour
of Hawaiian music and hula at the Kuhio Beach Park Hula
Mound, oceanside of Kalakaua Avenue and behind the large

TRAFFIC
SAFETY
Hawai‘i State Law requires drivers to STOP for pedestrians
who are in the half of the crosswalk nearest the driver‘s
car. The fine is $97. Pedestrians jaywalking or walking
against traffic signals may be fined $70.

SATURDAY FARMERS’ MARKET
AT K.C.C.
Held in the Kapi‘olani Community College parking
lot nearest the Diamond Head State Monument entrance, the
Saturday Farmers’ Market offers fresh produce, plants and
locally produced food products. Open Saturdays from 7:30
to 11:00 a.m., the market is a good place to stop for a
hot breakfast plate, coffee or snacks before (or after)

SECOND SATURDAY
Honolulu Culture & Arts District, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Second Saturday is a daytime family event dedicated to promoting
the cultural, artistic and culinary richness of downtown
Honolulu and historic Chinatown. Visit museums, galleries
and stores for special exhibits and activities. The Hawai‘i

“THE
ALOHA SHIRT”
The late Ellery J. Chun
is credited as the creator of the aloha shirt. He began
selling the colorful shirts from his family’s store in 1931,
but it wasn’t until 1936 that the name “Aloha Shirt”
was used in advertising and trademarked.
