• GOLFING
The island of Maui has become
one of the most popular golf resorts in the world. With
year-round tropical weather, stunning scenery and its championship
courses, it is no wonder why golf enthusiasts come back
year after year.
Golf was Wailea’s
first attraction. The resort has three award-winning championship
courses ranked among Golf Digest’s Top 10. The
Blue/(808) 875-5155, home of the LPGA Women’s
Kemper Open, has wide fairways and panoramic views of
the ocean, mountain ranges and neighboring islands. The
Gold/(808) 875-5111 has narrower and less forgiving
fairways with more doglegs and greater terrain variations.
Ancient Hawaiian stone walls that dot the Emerald Courses/(808)
875-5111 fairways provide some of the world's most
unusual hazards.
Kapalua also has three acclaimed championship
courses with its Bay, Village and Plantation Courses.
The Bay Course/(808)
669-8808 offers relaxed play along the palm
trees, Ironwoods and Cook pines which line the sheltered
waters of the bay. The
Village Course/(808) 669-8835 climbs the foot
of the West Maui mountains that challenges you with more
narrow fairways. The
Plantation Course/(808) 669-8877 completes
the triumvirate of superb golf experiences with dramatic
contouring of its holes around the showcase of sweeping
slopes and the unbelievable scenery.
A short cruise up Haleakala
Highway brings you to the 160-acre Pukalani
Country Club/(808) 572-1314. For one of the
par-3’s, players may use an iron across a ravine or may
chip to an alternate green surrounded by traps. Or, stop
by on your way to or from Haleakala Crater to enjoy the
spectacular panoramic views.
Some other resort courses that are worth mentioning
are the Makena North
and South Courses/(808) 879-3344 which run
along the western coastline
and up to undulating plains; The
Silversword Golf Course/(808) 874-0777 overlooks
Kihei and the island
of Kahoolawe; and Ka‘anapali
North and South/(808) 661-3691 with flat, straight
fairways, give you great views of Lanai. Maui also has
an enjoyable public course in the Waiehu
Municipal/(808) 243-7400 which runs along the
Waiehu coastline and valleys.
Left your clubs at home? Not a problem. Almost all pro
shops offer a variety of rental clubs and shoes. Here
are some helpful tips when making your tee time: The tradewinds
pick up in the afternoon and the Bermuda grass greens
break toward the ocean. FORE!
